Tidal wetlands were inventoried as mandated by Section 62.1-13.4 of the Virginia Wetlands Act of 1972. This effort began in 1972 and continued through the mid 1980's. The conversion to digital format was complete in 1992. No revisions to the data have occurred since the original data collection. Purpose: The TMI data can be used for monitoring changes in wetland resources, identifying environmentally sensitive areas for planning and landuse purposes, and to assist agencies regulating encroachment into tidal wetlands. Supplemental_Information: Tidal wetlands data were collected through site visits to all tidal marshes in Virginia using aerial photography for assistance. The geographic boundaries of tidal marshes were digitized from stable-based mylar, USGS 7.5 minute topographic quadrangle maps (scale = 1:24000). Aerial photography was used to correct for obvious discrepancies in the boundaries observed. The community structure and composition was described through site visits to all tidal marshes in the Tidewater region of Virginia. Digitized marsh polygons are coded for marsh or community type, marsh number, and county location. Community type is defined in accordance with criteria outlined in the WETLANDS GUIDELINES published by the VMRC in 1993. Marsh number refers to the catalogue number assigned to a specific polygon in the corresponding hardcopy publication.
