Data from both counties were merged and edited and verified based on high resolution aerial imagery.

Protected Lands

Included are Federal lands like National Wildlife Refuges and state lands like state parks, natural area preserves and state owned tidal lands. Ownership by various conservation organizations such as The Nature Conservancy and The Conservation Fund is also included. These areas were extracted from The Virginia Department of Conservatoin and Recreation's conservaton lands database.

Virginia Ecological Value Assessment Rank

The Virginia Ecological Value Assessment (VEVA) delineates priority conservation areas ranked by level of importance based on VA Dept. of Game and Inland Fisheries' Priority Wildlife Diversity Conservation Areas, VA Dept of Conservation and Recreation Division of Natural Heritage Conservation Sites Layer (CSL) and Natural Lands Network (NLN), VCU Center for Environmental Studies aquatic resource integrity layer and VIMS College of William and Mary Center for Coastal Resource Management Cumulative Resource Assessment. It was originally published in 2011 by the Virginia Coastal Zone Management Program and was updated for the Eastern Shore in 2014 by The Nature Conservancy.

Commercial Shellfish Aquaculture Sites

This layer shows commercial aquaculture sites, areas allocated for bottom aquaculture of shellfish (primarily oysters and hard clams). These data points are managed by Virginia Marine Resource Commission (VMRC) in order to better assess, plan, and manage aquaculture development throughout Virginia's coastal zone.

Baylor Grounds (Public Oyster Grounds)

In 1894 a massive two-year survey was conducted throughout State tidal waters (in the Chesapeake Bay and its tidal tributaries as well as on the Atlantic coast) to locate and map the naturally productive oyster beds, rocks, and shoals. Known as the "Baylor Survey," these areas are reserved for public shellfish harvesting and cannot be leased or used for other purposes.The Baylor Survey is still in use, and is shown on current oyster planting ground maps.

Tidal Marshes

1% Annual Chance Flood Economic Losses

This layer shows estimated total economic losses by Census block for the 1-percent annual chance flood. Economic loss data were developed using FEMA's HAZUS-MH risk analysis software. This software is based on current scientific and engineering knowledge, however there are uncertainties inherent in any loss estimation. Therefore, there may be significant differences between the modeled results and the actual economic losses following a specific flood event. Data shown here do not represent any single flood or event, rather they are derived from the maximum extent of modeled flooding at all locations across the entire Eastern Shore. As such, these data should only be used for planning purposes.
